Highlights

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the longest and most diverse trekking routes in Nepal. Located in the north-central region of the country, the trail lies entirely within the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal’s largest protected area. Renowned worldwide, this trek offers an extraordinary combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and high-altitude adventure.

The journey typically begins at an elevation of around 700 meters and gradually ascends to the highest point of the trek, Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters above sea level)—one of the highest trekking passes in the world. This dramatic change in altitude allows trekkers to experience a wide range of climates, landscapes, and ecosystems, from subtropical forests and river valleys to alpine terrain and high mountain deserts.

One of the greatest highlights of the Annapurna Circuit is its spectacular Himalayan scenery. Trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views of some of the most iconic peaks in the Annapurna range, including Annapurna II (7,937 m), Annapurna III (7,555 m), Annapurna IV (7,525 m), Gangapurna (7,455 m), and Tilicho Peak (7,134 m). Once the trail reaches Upper Pisang, these towering mountains become a constant presence, visible from many points along the route.

Most trekkers spend an additional night in Manang Valley (3,540 m), an important stop for acclimatisation before crossing Thorong La Pass. Manang is well known for its role in helping trekkers adapt safely to higher altitudes. During the acclimatisation day, trekkers often explore the surrounding villages, monasteries, and landscapes, gaining insight into the distinct culture influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. A popular acclimatisation hike is to Ice Lake (approximately 4,600 m), which offers stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the Himalayas and further supports altitude adaptation.

In terms of difficulty, the Annapurna Circuit is considered moderate to challenging. However, with good physical fitness, proper acclimatisation, and a positive mindset, most trekkers can complete the journey without major health issues. The trek is also highly flexible in duration. Depending on available time, trekkers can choose shorter itineraries or extend the route.

For those with extra days, a side trip to Tilicho Lake (4,919 m)—one of the highest lakes in the world—is a popular and rewarding addition. This extension enhances the trek with even more dramatic landscapes and high-altitude experiences.

Overall, the Annapurna Circuit Trek is a complete trekking experience, offering everything a trekker could desire: towering mountains, varied landscapes, rich culture, and a true sense of Himalayan adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,500 m)

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu. You will be transferred to your hotel in Thamel. In the evening, your trekking guide will meet you and provide a detailed briefing about the trekking program.

Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Chyame via Besisahar (2,670 m)

Duration: 9–10 hours
Take a private vehicle from Kathmandu to Besisahar and continue driving to Chyame on the same day. Chyame is the official starting point of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. The long but scenic drive passes through hills, rivers, and waterfalls. Overnight stay in Chyame.

Day 3: Trek from Chyame to Upper Pisang (3,310 m)

Duration: ~7.5 hours
Begin your Annapurna Circuit trek from Chyame. The trail follows the Marshyangdi River and passes through beautiful green forests. You will walk through Bratang Village, known for its apple farms, before reaching Upper Pisang. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of Lamjung Himal (6,983 m), Annapurna II (7,937 m), and Annapurna IV (7,525 m).

Day 4: Trek from Upper Pisang to Manang Valley (3,540 m)

Duration: 7–8 hours
Trek toward Manang via the upper trail through Ghyaru for stunning mountain views. After a steep ascent of about 1.5 hours, take a short coffee break at Ghyaru. Continue trekking for about 2 hours to Ngawal, where you will have lunch. From Ngawal, walk briefly before descending to Braka Village, then follow the road for approximately 2.5 hours to reach Manang.

Day 5: Acclimatization Day in Manang (3,540 m)

This day is dedicated to acclimatization and exploration of Manang Village. Take short hikes to nearby viewpoints to enjoy panoramic views of the Annapurna Range and Gangapurna Mountain. This is an important day to allow your body to adjust to the altitude and assess your readiness for crossing Thorong La Pass.

Day 6: Trek from Manang to Yak Kharka (4,050 m)

Duration: ~5 hours
A relatively shorter and easier trekking day. The trail is mostly gradual, with gentle ups and downs across open alpine terrain. Overnight stay at Yak Kharka.

Day 7: Trek from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4,550 m) or High Camp (4,880 m)

Duration: ~4.5 hours
Today you will decide whether to stay at Thorong Phedi or continue to High Camp. If you are feeling well and free from altitude sickness, staying at High Camp is recommended, as it shortens the next day’s hike to Thorong La Pass by about one hour.

Day 8: Cross Thorong La Pass (5,416 m) and Descend to Muktinath (3,760 m)

Start early around 4:00 AM for the challenging but rewarding crossing of Thorong La Pass. Early starts are essential to avoid strong winds that usually pick up after 10:00 AM. Reach the pass, enjoy photos and views, then descend to the sacred town of Muktinath. This is the most significant and final trekking day of the Annapurna Circuit.

Day 9: Drive from Muktinath to Pokhara

Duration: 8–9 hours
Take a bus from Muktinath to Pokhara, passing through the beautiful Kali Gandaki Valley. Overnight in Pokhara.

Day 10: Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu

Duration: ~8 hours
Travel back to Kathmandu by tourist bus. Evening at leisure for shopping or rest.
