Highlights

The Langtang Gosainkunda Trek is a 16-day journey to the holy lake of Gosainkunda and the beautiful Langtang Valley, with a brief detour into the Helambu region at the end. The trek is moderate as the highest point is around 4984 meters. The trek offers visitors an amazing blend of natural and cultural experiences. As a result, it has become one of the most popular treks in Nepal for both domestic and international tourists.

The Langtang Gosainkunda Trek lies within the boundary of Langtang National Park, the first Himalayan national park of Nepal, known for its rich wildlife, vegetation, spectacular mountain sceneries, and natural landscapes. It is home to various species of endangered animals like the Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, Snow Leopard, Wild Dog, and Ghoral. The trail passes through the dense forest of Rhododendrons, Oaks, and Junipers, quiet streams and rivulets, alpine lakes, and beautiful pasture valleys. If you are lucky enough, you might get a chance to see Red Pandas playing around the trees. During the trek, the panoramic view of various peaks, especially of the Langtang Range, is amazing. Kyanjin Ri, Tserko Ri, Gosainkunda Lake, and Laurebina Pass are some ideal spots to take a moment and gaze upon the mighty Himalayan peaks.

The Langtang Gosainkunda Trek offers a wonderful experience of the rich culture, tradition, and lifestyle of the local inhabitants. During the trek, you will walk through the beautiful, serene villages of various ethnic communities like Tamang, Sherpa, and Hyolmo with frequent encounters with Yaks as well. The majority of the people in this region practice Tibetan Buddhism, which they have kept alive for a long time. Beautifully carved mani walls, prayer flags, Chorten, stupas, etc. can be found abundantly throughout the trail, which reflects the devotion and faith of the locals to the religion.

One of the many things that you can do on this trek is to visit the cheese factory at Kyanjin Gompa, which was established in the 1950s by Swiss dairy specialist Werner Schulthess. This cheese factory has played a huge role in establishing cheese culture in Nepal. You can add a couple of extra days’ rest at Kyanjin Gumba for a day hike to Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri for the spectacular scenery of the surrounding peaks, and visit the cheese factory. And when you are at Gosainkunda, you can take an extra day to explore the surrounding lakes. On the full moon day of August, there is a huge festival called Janai Purnima. Hindu people and shamans from various regions of Nepal come to this lake to perform a special kind of puja.
